Waitawheta River

The River

This beautiful small river emerges from the Kaimai Mamaku State Forest Park, tumbles through the Karangahaki Gorge before entering the Ohinimouri River between Waihi and Paeroa. The lower reaches, flowing through the gorge, are made up of deep, dark pools seprated by boulder strewn turbulent rapids. Some large fish are taken here but fishing methods need to be fairly crude to deal with the harsh environment.

Access to the lower river is excellent, with a well maintained walkway that follows the old goldmining paths. This is in fact a small section of a larger network of walking tracks that run throughout the Forest Park.

The middle and upper reaches contain less dramatic water but the opportunities to stalk fish are much greater. Both pools and runs hold fish in a range of sizes that respond to a well presented fly on light tackle - AFTM 5 is ideal.

Fishing

This river can attract alot of attention from anglers and trampers, ease of access combined with stunning scenery prove to be a magnet for those enjoying the outdoors. This can make the fishing rather challenging, especially in the more popular areas during the summer.

For the thinking flyfisher, good fish can be taken. The key here is stealth combined with good presentation. I have had success with a range of smaller nymphs and dries, with the first or second cast often proving decisive.

The average size may not be large but the satisfaction levels are immense. I feel very fortunate to have the chance to catch fin perfect, wild trout in this delightful setting.

One worrying trend is the reducing fish numbers. Scientific studies have revealed that smaller rivers can suffer a significant decline when anglers take too many fish. With that in mind, I personally adopt a 'catch and release only' policy on this river. On an optimistic note this river is linked to the larger Ohinemouri River which in turn is part of the Waihou River system. This should provide a good reservoir of fish to bolster declining numbers.
