Trophy Trout Painting.

Photograph of the trout lying in the landing net. The length of the fish was gauged at a later date by measuring the net.

The finished 'life size' painting. Rather than simply an illustrated fish on a white background, this painting brings to mind the wild fish living in its natural environment.

The Process

If you are interested in commissioning a painting of your own trophy trout you should begin by gathering plenty of information. Modern digital cameras make it quite easy to to get a number of good shots of the fish. The key here is to take lots of photographs; different lighting (including flash), various angles, close ups of head and fins... This will ensure that plenty of detail is available for inclusion in the painting.

If you plan to release the fish and dont have a tape measure available, I suggest photographing the fish against a landing net or fly rod. This will enable you to gauge the length of the fish at a later date by measuring the other items in the photograph.

Dont just photograph the fish, to add authenticity to your painting it is great to have reference shots of rocks, gravel, tree roots... anything that might seem relevant. You may even get the urge to write a few notes.
